I begin my hair journey six years ago. I will never forget thinking that if I chopped all my hair off and begin to grow my hair out, but this time with no chemicals my hair would we HOT! I remember daydreaming of myself with long, thick, and gorgeous locs. I was so confident about this decision I cut my hair off on camera. I told the world it was the best decision ever and that everyone around me should join me in my journey. Fast forward 2 years post big chop and my mirror reflected thin, limp fine hair. I was depressed, ashamed and embarrassed of my decision to go natural. That awesome hair I thought I would have didn’t exist in my eyes…. Until I added vitamins to my life. What I didn’t know is I was lacking and deficit in certain vitamins. Those vitamins aided in my hair growth. So as long as I lacked them, I saw no growth or would see a season of growth followed by two seasons of unexplained hair loss. Finally, after realizing that I had perfected every method to stimulate growth and still couldn’t retain it, I knew my problem was bigger. I sought a hair specialist that told me my problem was more than likely internal. She recommended three vitamins to me…. I have had healthy beautiful natural hair ever since!
Here are 3 Vitamins Natural Ladies should take:
1. Biotin (Vitamin H) biotin strengthens the actual hair follicle (it works at the actual root of the hair or the scalp) – my main reason for starting this vitamin was because my hair was thinning. Biotin is water a soluble vitamin that helps produce healthy hair proteins like Keratin. Keratin is the protein responsible for the thickness of your hair. Biotin increases hair elasticity and helps the hair retain moisture. This prevents dryness and therefore helps the hair maintain length. Biotin should be taken with large amounts of water to help the breakdown of it in our systems. Many naturals have complained of breakouts due to biotin. My dermatologists has repeatedly told me that B vitamins will cause acne or skin lesions if not taken with a high amount of water. Since the vitamin is water soluble, water aids in the breakdown of it, if not enough water is taken the vitamin reactions by sitting in the systems just a little longer than needed, hence causing breakouts. Note: Water Soluble means that our body does not STORE the vitamin in our system.
2. Vitamin C – strengthens the hair, adds shine and helps to prevent hair loss. Vitamin C also helps with the absorption of iron – Vitamin C disables premature hair loss when taken correctly. Vitamin C is also water soluble and can be found easily in the foods we eat and drink every day. Vitamin C provides the protein Collagen for the hair and immune system. It also holds antioxidants properties like Vitamin E and zinc. Antioxidants help protect your hair from things that may cause it to become brittle and weak. This is why when used in conjunction with IRON vitamin C is very essential to your hair growth.
3. Iron (Niacin) carries oxygen to the hair and promotes growth (my hair took off when I begin taking iron with the Vitamin C) – Iron deficiency is huge among women. According to Black Doctor .ORG 10% of black women suffer with anemia. Anemia is a condition known to make you iron deficit and caused hair loss. In my case, I was tested for anemia and my results did show I suffered with a mild case of it. My main symptom of my anemia was my hair thinning and shedding in excessive amounts. The thinning showed up primarily in my edges and crown area. Iron provides oxygen to the scalp and women are recommended to take 14-15mg daily. In extreme cases of hair loss doses may be greater.

My hair tip would be tip give your hair a good trim before starting your vitamin regimen, always take pictures of hair’s progress and also give your vitamin at least 60 days to test results.
