Hello everybody! My name is Myzha, and I am 23 year old senior in college from New Orleans. I am an all around fun loving person who is currently preparing for the next chapter in my life.
What are your reasons for going natural?
My going natural experience started off as a bet to see how long I could go without a perm. When I cut my hair in 2011 I only knew 2 people who were fully natural so I had no idea what being fully natural would be like. I have always had thick hair, but from my current experience thick permed hair is totally different from thick natural hair. I cut my hair because I wanted a change. I wanted to see what my hair would look like at it’s natural state. It was by far one of the best decisions I have made to date.
How did you transition (or did you BC)?
I transitioned for about 9 months, but due to heat damage I had to get more than I thought cut off. My go to styles during my transition phase were Bantu knots and spiral curls. It was too hard to keep my hair straightened due to the texture differences.
What emotional struggles, if any, have you faced since going natural?
Going natural is definitely a confidence booster. When I first cut my hair I was the most self conscience I had ever been in my life. This was the shortest my hair had ever been and my main focus was to not look like a boy. Once my hair began to grow out, it took me awhile to understand that my hair naturally attracts people lol. Being natural has definitely taught me to not be ashamed of who I am, and helped me become a more sociable person.
How do others respond to your hair?
I get tons of questions and comments about my hair. My favorite is “It’s so fluffy” or the random in store question “Is that all your hair?” I have never really had any negative comments about my hair. The most negative was recent was a comment about my hair for graduation. Someone thought that I needed to straighten and “tame” my hair for my graduation pictures. Overall the comments and questions I get are 95% positive.
My go-to style are three-strand twistouts and my new found favorite braid and curls.
What’s your favorite product and why?
My current favorite product is the cantu twist and lock gel. It is the only product that I feel truly defines my curls and my styles last for multiple days without me having to re-due them.
What piece of advice would you share with someone who is just starting out?
BE PATIENT!! I recently was at a point where I felt like my hair had stopped growing. I felt like it was growing in thickness and not length like I wanted it to. I was ready to cut it off and start all over, but recently I was apart of one of my good friends wedding which I needed my hair straightened for. I was SHOCKED at the length my hair was. I recently went to the “Love My Texture” event here in my city and I heard another lady talk about how she felt like her hair wasn’t growing, and I wanted to find her and tell her don’t give up. As long as you take care of your hair ladies it will grow I promise!
Who is your hair crush?
This is sooo hard. A few hair crushes of mine are: Ms. Vaughn Tv, Nelly Fro Fro, Annisa LiMara, My Thrifted closet on YouTube (Shadell I think her name is.), and the stylish JD Winters on Instagram.
