What? Make wash day longer by washing hair in sections? Why would anyone do that?
Actually, washing your hair in sections is much better for highly textured hair, especially if your hair medium to long in length.
1. Doing this allows you to use less product because there’s less hair to penetrate per section. Instead of using two handfuls of shampoo or conditioner to get through all of your hair, you can use smaller amounts for each section, which will add up to a smaller amount used overall.
2. Also, it ensures that each strand gets properly coated and cleansed.
3. Washing in sections means you have more access to your scalp, which is highly important because scalp buildup is detrimental to hair growth and health.
4. Washing in sections reduces the risk and the severity of tangles and breakage by reducing the amount of hair involved. When you wash your hair, and you’re manipulating and scrubbing the strands, it has a high tendency to get tangled.
Section your hair into the desired amount of sections and braid or twist each section. Undo a braid or twist and wash that section only, rinse and twist it back up.
Things to remember:
1. Do not “scrub” the section in a circular motion. Instead, wash down the hair shaft, focusing most of the movement on the scalp.
2. Some persons like to do everything to each section before moving on; that is, washing, conditioning and putting in a leave in. I wouldn’t recommend this if you have more than two sections because there is increased chance of run-off of product from other sections of the hair to get on the newly washed and conditioned section.
This is more time consuming, but it’s better than having tangles and breakage each time you wash.
